The Groton Police started a Traffic Unit in March of 2007. The primary function of the Traffic Unit is to reduce traffic crashes within the town and make our roads safer. The Traffic Unit will address all traffic and safety related issues. Officers will use pro-active enforcement, increased police presence, community education, and problem solving.

The unit is comprised of three officers and a
sergeant. They will be tasked with the handling of saturation patrols of trouble and high crash areas, crosswalks and school crossings, as well as parking, and other traffic and safety related duties. The officers will also perform directed patrols in the problem traffic areas. The police department has designated a low-profile cruiser for the Traffic Unit. Those officers assigned to the Traffic Unit will also be receiving additional
training and new equipment, such as a LIDAR unit for speed enforcement.
